Personally, I prefer small scale pieces
that require more precise detailed work. This challenges me to bring out the unique characteristics of the individual pieces
of wood. I truly enjoy the look and texture of each piece. Because of this, I work hard to create not only
a functional piece of art that is pleasing to the eye, but also something that is soothing to the touch.
My
creative process starts with an idea, followed by a rough sketch of a particular design. I select a species
of wood for each piece by matching color and grain pattern to fit just what I am looking for. I may also
combine other materials such as, acrylics, metals, and semi-precious stones to accent the wood and give it a richer look full
of depth.
My abilities grew out of my childhood experiences helping my father with building and repair projects in and around
our home. He taught me the techniques of hand-tools and their use in shaping wood and metal.
A Junior High School woodshop course opened my eyes to the use of woodworking machinery and the rest was history. For
the next 50 years, working in wood became an avocation providing hours of creativity and joy. After retiring in 2000, I was
able to devote more of my time to the art of woodworking, not only for my enjoyment, but also for my clients. - John Prenton
